Crochet

Start with the foundations, then build your skills one lesson at a time.

Lesson 1 · Crochet foundations

For complete beginners. I’ll guide you through the basics of crochet. We’ll practice single crochet while making a simple headband or bracelet.

What you’ll learn

  • The parts of a crochet hook and basic yarn terminology.
  • Yarn weights, how to read a yarn label, and how different fibers affect the finished piece.
  • Different ways to hold the yarn and control tension, so you can explore what feels comfortable.
  • Single crochet, practiced in a simple wearable project.

Bring to class

  • Medium-weight, number 4 yarn. I recommend one seven-ounce skein, which is more than enough for this small project.
  • A 5–6 mm crochet hook.
  • A button, a hair tie, or a medium-sized bead for the project.

Watch: Getting started with hook and yarn

Watch how I position the yarn and hook, form a starting loop and begin a chain. Pause to look at my hand position, move back along the timeline, or replay the clip.

Lesson 2 · Stitches and shaping

Build on the basics. We’ll explore the structure of a crochet piece while making a dishcloth or handkerchief that uses different stitches for practice.

What you’ll learn

  • How to recognize the parts of the piece you’re making.
  • Single crochet, half-double crochet and double crochet.
  • How increases and decreases introduce shaping into a pattern.

Bring to class

  • Yarn for your practice cloth.
  • A 5–6 mm crochet hook.

Watch: Building on the basics

Follow my hook and yarn movements as I work stitches along a short chain. Pause to see where the hook enters, then replay the movement as often as you need.

Lesson 3 · Rounds, color and confidence

Practice with a granny square. I’ll help you work in rounds and build confidence recognizing and correcting mistakes.

What you’ll learn

  • Starting with a magic ring and working in rounds.
  • Identifying stitches and spotting errors in your work.
  • Frogging: undoing stitches so you can fix a mistake and continue.
  • Deciding when an error is worth undoing and practicing a successful repair.
  • Changing between separate yarn colors.

Bring to class

  • Yarn in two separate colors is required for color-change practice. A single multicolored skein does not replace the two colors.
  • A 5–6 mm crochet hook.

Seven ounces of yarn should be plenty for this project.

Knitting

Get comfortable with yarn and needles in your first lesson.

Lesson 1 · Knitting foundations

I’ll show you how to cast on and help you explore comfortable ways to hold your knitting needles.

Bring to class

  • Medium-weight, number 4 yarn.
  • 6 mm knitting needles. Straight or circular needles are both suitable for the first lesson, so you can use either type you already own.

Progression, scheduling and the next lesson

You can begin with Crochet Lesson 1 and choose to continue to Lessons 2 and 3 as your confidence grows. Continuing is optional. A private crochet or knitting lesson can focus on the level or technique you want help with.

We plan to offer two group classes each week, with lesson levels rotating from week to week. Dates and times will be announced before booking opens. Where possible, we’ll offer the next lesson at a familiar weekday and time to make it easier for returning students to continue.

When booking opens, we plan to announce the next lesson to current students first and wait 24 hours before advertising it more widely. Places will remain available through the normal booking calendar and will be confirmed when booked; advance notice does not hold a seat.
