Reddit r/place 2022 USA Flag

Reddit r/place 2022 USA Flag

Hello, Lyniece here! First of all, thank you for visiting our site, and now reading this blog post!

The project started as a challenge from Chris 😄He asked if I could make a crochet or knit piece pixel by pixel. At first I was confused about what he was referring to, so he brought up the reddit r/place event that was actively taking place at the time. He showed me each pixel, then zoomed out and said "could you take one these images from this bigger image and crochet it pixel by pixel?" "Sure" I said, after a few days I landed on the USA flag as I saw the final image from the subreddit putting it together. Featuring all sorts of iconic USA landmarks and historical moments, its an amazing pixel pattern. So out of all the possible choices, I choose the USA Flag. I knew it was going to be hard, however I didn't think it would as hard it showed itself from the first few rows. The biggest challenge was lining each stripe up, then the letters from r/Americanflaginplace, getting those right would prove I had the concept. Well I had to restart 3 times to get everything lined up and learn the technique to do it each time. Then came the stars, I had anxiety that I would miss one. Each stitch is a pixel that is 229 stitches across and 254 rows. It’s layer double stitch one side being the USA Flag from the 2022 r/ place event and the other side is black with a 42 signature on the back, which is a reference from Hitch Hikers Guide to Galaxy. The coordination from the community on reddit when the event took place was incredible to see, I ended up getting the final pixel image from a sub reddit which is at the top of the flag "r/Americanflaginplace" that community organized this pattern to put on r/place. If you were apart of that event, you did an amazing job getting this cemented in the history of the internet! Every few minutes you fought pixel by pixel! This piece couldn't have been done without you all, thank you! This project took just over 2 years to complete. We did the math and we figured it took a total of 240 hours of straight crocheting.

Here a final image of the 2022 r/place event; Spot the USA flag!

The time lapse at the bottom of each page is me crocheting the flag. I'm so happy how it turned out, and it taught me so much about crocheting.
